Waterford's Boston Cane Awarded to 106-Year Old Veteran

None of the current or recent Select Board members had ever dealt with the Boston Cane, so when Al Struck brought the idea of awarding the cane to Mr. L'Hote to the board, no one quite knew how to handle it. Did Waterford have a policy for who could receive the cane? If not, should one be established prior to awarding it? Should the original 1909 cane be taken out of the vault and put back into circulation, or should a replica be purchased?
After some research, it was found that many towns do have policies for the Boston Cane and the board plans to adopt one in the future, but it was hard to imagine a more deserving recipient than a 106-year old WWII veteran. It was decided that the original cane should be preserved so a replica was purchased for the presentation.
